An artificial cell is a minimal cell from artificial parts and is an emerging technology. Until recently, most attempts have generally created only a package that can do many things a cell can do, such as transcribe and translate proteins and generate ATP but not yet a fully operational cell. Some scientists, one of which is Daniel Hammer have found ways to make artificial cells that can go to certain parts of the body and release medical drugs when told to. The first artificial cell was created by Thomas Chang at McGill University. An artificial cell wall/cell membrane is made of polymersomes. the hemoglobin is placed in the center. In the late sixties Thomas Chang discovered that artificial cells could carry enzymes which could correct certain metabolic disorders, and he also developed an artificial cell filled with charcoal which could treat drug poisoning. On May 20, 2010, the private J. Craig Venter Institute announced that they have created the first synthetic cell, completely controlled by man-made genetic instructions, which can survive and reproduce itself.  i want so much to applaud him, for all the goodness this cell thing can bring to us human, but then again, i think this someone needs some intro to X men. all i can think of is this "creature" thingy going out of control. and spreading nothing but new diseases to us, which is highly possible. mutations and so they say. i don't even know why i bother blogging about this and its not like i have nothing to do, i have tons of notes to read, its just that this thing they are so proud of is terrifying. |
